Parenting is a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week responsibility for any family.
When a family has a child with disabilities there are many stresses
other families may not have to deal with. These stresses can cause many
problems for all members of the family. Sometimes a chance for a "breather"
from their normal duties can make a world of difference for all involved.
This "breather" may be available through Family Support Services in the form of "Respite Care."
This service entails a staff person coming into the home or taking the child out
of the home at pre-selected times providing all necessary supports for the child who has a disability,
allowing a respite from those responsibilities. This respite time may be utilized
as the family sees fit. Parents may be as involved as they wish in the hiring and
training process, ensuring good compatibility.
